Fun Things You Can Do Locally When You Can’t Take an Expensive Vacation

Some call it a staycation.  It’s like a mini vacation exploring in your own hometown area, or even just relaxing at your home itself.  It’s actually possible to have an even better vacation at home, since you’re saving so much money on travel, lodging, and food. That money could instead be spent eating at a nice restaurant or exploring sporting adventures in your area. There’s no reason to be upset if you can’t afford a week in Italy.  You can find plenty to do at home!

Here are a few ways to avoid the stress of traveling.   Sleeping in a different bed, and paying too much to eat every meal at a restaurant, and hours spent cramped in a car or plane ride, can be quite exhausting if not well planned when your time and finances allow.  Spend that money on more enjoyable activities, like shopping online at your favorite shops!  Wink.  I mean, who wouldn’t love to spend a vacation updating to a whole new wardrobe?! 😃

Enjoy your vacation at home:
Spend the day at the beach.
If you’re lucky enough to live near a lake or the ocean, a day at the beach is a good way to spend the day. Work on your tan, jog the beach, enjoy the shops along the shore!
Spend the day at the pool.
Those without access to a beach can take advantage of the next best thing: the local pool. Splurge for snacks and live it up.  If it’s too cold out, look for a fun indoor place to swim.
Go for a long bike ride.
Your bike might be hiding behind the lawnmower or beneath the rake, but it’s ready to go. Add some air to the tires and go out for a long ride. Look online for bike paths and popular routes.  Monterey has a wonderful bike trail to enjoy!
Have a picnic.
Whether it’s at the park, pool, or beach, a picnic provides a relaxing, enjoyable time. Pack your favorite foods and bring your favorite people. Enjoy a few favorite games while you are there, or relax and read a new book.
Attend a sporting event.
Professional sports are exciting, but expensive. If an NBA game is out of your budget, check out the local high school team. Sports can be exciting at any level.
Read a book.
It can be hard to find time to read when you always seem to be busy with work. Take advantage of your free time and relax with a good book. You might even find the time to get a library card. Then your books are free.  You can also download books to listen to audibly if you are one like me who likes to listen while also working a craft or an outdoor project.
Visit a local museum or zoo.
Most people go out of town to visit the zoo or museum. Now is the time to check out your local offerings.  The Monterey Bay Aquarium is an extra special place to visit!
Spend a day at the movies.
Pack in three or more movies in the same day if you desire. The real cost is the food. Consider watching one movie, then heading out for lunch. You’ll be full and satisfied for the next couple of movies, but the popcorn is still ever so tempting, right?
Have friends over for a movie night.
Stay at home and rent movies on demand. Invite over a few friends and tell them to bring their favorite snacks.  You might even use a projector and make it feel like a theatrical experience or an old fashioned drive-in movie.
Rent a boat.
Rent a speedboat or sailboat for the day. Test out your skills and spend some quality time on the water.  Monterey Bay is also a lovely place to kayak or paddle-board.  There are plenty of sea creatures awaiting your exploration.  The otters and sea lions love to entertain.
Check out a local band.
Get out for an evening and enjoy the local music scene. Enjoy the nightlife for a change of pace.  Or move the furniture in the house and create your own dance floor for the family to enjoy together.
Go out for a fancy lunch.
Since you’re not spending money on a vacation, you might have the funds available to have lunch at that fancy restaurant downtown. Splurge a little bit and enjoy yourself.
Work on your golf or tennis game.
Or whatever your favorite sport is!  Horseback riding is a fun and relaxing exploration as well.  Or maybe simply taking an outdoor hike in a new national park you’ve not explored yet in your area would be fun!

A staycation can sometimes be a better option than going out of town. The sights might be familiar, but you’ll have more money to spend on entertainment if you stay at home. Use your vacation time wisely, get out of the house, and enjoy your time off.

And of course, a day trip to Monterey is always a treat if home doesn’t fit your vacation vibe.  Be sure to stop by and say a little hello in the shop if you are in town!  We are always excited to visit with you. ☺️
